Understand, Organize, Draft, Polish ... Breathe

We’ve been helping students prepare for college for the last 23 years,  and during that time, college  admissions has steadily become more competitive, complicated and costly. As the number of applicants for competitive schools rises, acceptance rates drop, and the great tie-breaker, the college essay (or personal statement) becomes a more important factor in admissions decisions. In most cases, your essays represent your best opportunity to set yourself apart from others with similar grades and test scores.

UNDERSTAND

Why do colleges even ask for personal statements and how important are they? To understand, we suggest you think of admissions decisions as a two-stage process.

PHASE I – First, there is the raw data–grades, test scores, school profiles, honors or advanced courses attempted, extracurricular activities, work history, etc. It’s a lot of information, and schools use it all to narrow the applicant pool to those students who seem to have the right stuff to fit in and excel on their campus.

PHASE II –  Now that the admissions team has used data to narrow the field to a qualified group of applicants, they have a pretty good idea of what percentage of these students will accept an invitation to attend. At this point, they look to your personal, written responses to essay prompts to uncover the unique individual behind the data and to help them make the difficult call between deny, waitlist, or admit. In this crucial final phase of the admissions decision process, the personal statement is your greatest opportunity to tell your unique, engaging and authentic story and move the outcome in your favor.

ORGANIZE

After you understand what kind of writing colleges are looking for, it’s important to break the big challenge of writing multiple essays for all your schools down into a simple series of steps. At this point, it’s also important that we strategize about how to write a few tent-pole essays and then customize those stories for individual schools so that you are efficient and don’t waste precious time and effort.

DRAFT

Once we’re organized, we slay some dragons. We start with the most important essay prompts first–often the Common App essay–scratch out an outline for a first draft, and get some words on paper. These first drafts are meant to go quickly, in one burst of effort. Your final products will be so much better, but it’s important to get started and put a rough version of your story on paper. One messy, no-worries draft for each prompt.

POLISH

This is where we really shine as writing coaches. Once we see your first drafts and know your story thoroughly, we can help you make sure you’re answering the question, telling a really engaging story, revealing the best parts of your character, and maintaining an authentic and consistent tone throughout. We’ll provide detailed notes, suggestions, and style and grammar edits. When an essay is clean, compelling and effective, you can check it off of your list as “ready to submit.”

BREATHE

Having an organized plan and an experienced coach in your corner makes it so much easier to approach the challenge relaxed and confident. Every time you check off one of the personal statements and supplemental essays on your master list, you’ll feel more in control of your college admissions odyssey. It feels great to know that you didn’t let your essays become a last-minute afterthought, and that you’ve maximized your admissions outcomes by framing your applications with the most persuasive writing possible.

My first jobs as an English teacher were university courses--at San Diego State and Rutgers University in the US, and the University of Aix-en-Provence in France. But for the past 23 years, I've been working with students preparing for one of life's biggest intersections--heading off to college and their adult lives.

I currently direct a pre-college summer program for college-bound students at UC Berkeley, develop training programs for YouTube and other digital media companies, and help students and creators tell their stories to colleges, online audiences, and employers. When I’m not writing or collaborating with you on your writing, I’m enjoying time with my two children, reading, skiing, traveling and enjoying the beach life in San Diego, California.

I’m a native San Diegan, father, and an aficionado of basketball, vintage video games, pitchy karaoke, and lecturing my son on how much better Star Wars was "back in the day." I played college basketball at St. Mary’s College and Whittier College where I earned my B.A. in Psychology in 2002.

After college, I taught high school chemistry and started doing some individual tutoring on the side. I had scored in the 97th percentile on my own SATs, and as I began helping students prepare for their ACT and SAT exams, I realized both that I had a knack for helping students understand the psychology of standardized tests. Now, ten years later, I’m a full-time academic and test prep tutor, and I believe that makes a big difference in the kind of expertise and tangible results I can offer.

It is possible to change your test scores and make a real difference in your college admissions outcomes, and I can show you exactly how to get there.
